Tourism is the world’s largest employer, accounting for more than 260 million jobs or 10.7% of the global labor force. Tourism in India is contributing around 5.9% of the GDP and providing employment to about 41.8 million people. It is an effective instrument for generating employment, earning revenues and foreign exchange, enhancing environment, preserving culture and tradition thereby facilitating overall development.
Mar Ivanios College became the premier educational institute in Kerala to introduce a two-year Post-graduate programme in Tourism - Master of Tourism Administration (MTA) in the year 2000. Initially the Department of Tourism was functioning as a part of Department of Commerce, and in 2013 it was reconstituted as a full-fledged Department.
MTA is a 2 year intensive study programme that enables students to have practical and theoretical knowledge in various aspects of the travel and tourism industry. On completion of the course the students are empowered to take up any job in the travel and tourism industry. The department invites eminent faculties from different universities and various sectors of the industry to groom the students to have a global perspective. The course provides job opportunities for the students in airlines, hotels, tour operations, air ticketing agencies, airports, travel agencies, event management companies etc.
