The Department of Zoology was established in 1954 with the introduction of B.Sc.(Zoology) Degree course. The Post-graduate course (M.Sc) in Zoology was started in 1961 with late (Dr.) A.P. Mathew assuming charge as the Head of the Department Dr.Antony Nadakal, Prof. K. P. Sebastian, Prof. Sophy Joseph, Prof. Lalitha Thomas, Dr. P.V. George, Prof. Varghese Cherian and Prof T.V. George served as Heads in the succeeding years.
The Research Division of the Department was started in 1961 under the stewardship of late (Dr.) A.P. Mathew and Late (Dr.) Antony Nadakal. The Department was recognized as a research centre by the University of Kerala in 1961. Since then, a number of major and minor research projects were undertaken in the Department. The University Grants Commission has recognized the Department as a Centre for conducting research work for teachers under the Faculty Improvement programme. At present there are four approved research guides offering guidance to research leading to Ph.D. So far, 15 Ph.Ds have been produced from the Research Division of this Department.
